Introducing Open Office Hours with LGS Dean, Kim Jacobs Arriolla

LGS Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola is hosting open office hours each month (September – May) for LGS students. All LGS students are welcome – just come to the Dean’s Office (Administration Building, Suite 202) during office hours, sign in upon arrival, and you’ll be able to meet with the Dean individually. We will offer light refreshments in the office while you wait. Hours will be first come, first serve. 

Reminder: Emory University international travel policy requires all Emory-sponsored international travel to be approved by the student’s school of enrollment. For LGS students, all Emory-related international travel, regardless of funding source (e.g., PDS award, program funding, etc.) MUST be approved through the LGS International Travel Permission Form.

New! Nucleate Atlanta Launch

Nucleate Atlanta will be kicking off the 2022-2023 year with a launch event at Orpheus Brewing @ 6:00 PM Thursday, September 15th. Get to know Nucleate and network with entrepreneurs and professionals in the local life science industry.  This event is open to anyone who has an interest in biotech entrepreneurship. Graduate students (PhD/MBA/JD/MD) and postdocs are particularly encouraged!

New! Strategies for Professional Success from LGS Career Coaches

Join this informal Q&A session with professional LGS Career Coaches, Ariela Freedman and Helen Klepac. Learn what career coaching appointments look like, how they can help, and how to prepare for a range of career options. The session will be moderated by advanced graduate students who have previously worked with LGS career coaches.

New!  Twin Memorials Engagement Sessions

Upcoming community engagement sessions will be hosted by the Twin Memorials Working Group, beginning on Sept. 12 on the Oxford campus. 

All members of the Emory community, and anyone in Atlanta and the surrounding areas, including alumni, are invited to any of the sessions to provide input on initial design concepts for the memorials to the enslaved persons whose labor built Emory. The concepts that will be presented were informed by community engagement sessions last spring.

New!  NSF-GRFP: Zoom Webinar

Prospective applicants are invited to join this Zoom webinar for the NSF-GRFP. It will be moderated by a faculty member with a panel of current doctoral students who are recent awardees. The webinar aims to provide tips and guidelines for prospective applicants for this fellowship program. The Zoom information will be provided by noon on the date of the webinar to all who have registered.

Imposter Syndrome and Building Resilience Panel

Dr. David Jacho-Chavez, Dr. Amanda Marie James, and Dr. Hilary King will discuss how to navigate imposter syndrome as a professional and build resilience to resist those feelings.

The LGS Writing Group is back!

Are you working on a writing project? If so, our supportive community of writers can help you get it done! Join our weekly graduate student writing group for two hours of dedicated writing time (using the pomodoro method) as well as the opportunity to obtain feedback from a Writing Center graduate tutor or an English Language Specialist, if desired. Come for 1 week or come for them all.

Writing Center Offerings for Fall 2022

The Emory Writing Center (EWC) is open year-round to support writers (students, staff, and faculty). The Writing Center offers one-on-one remote and in-person tutoring for writers working on a range of composition projects (essays, applications, reports, theses, etc.), at any stage of the writing process (from brainstorming to final revisions). Writing Center tutors work on idea development, structure, use of sources, style, grammar, and more. 

• The EWC will open from September 14 through December 14 for a hybrid term with both in-person tutorials in Callaway N111 and online appointments. Our appointment system will be available for sign-ups about a week after add/drop/swap ends. 

Research Assistant for Digital Archives and Indigenous Afterlives of Scientific Objects

Dr. Lori Jahnke (Anthropology) invites applications from graduate students for a Research Assistant position supporting the NSF funded project Digital Archives and Indigenous Afterlives of Scientific Objects. The Research Assistant will help co-PI Jahnke oversee development of the digital archive, prepare content for upload, and work with other project members to refine metadata protocols based on ethnographic findings.

The successful candidate will join an inter-institutional and international team of students, scholars, and A’uwẽ-Xavante developing an online digital archive that returns digital copies of researcher-produced content to the central Brazilian Indigenous communities they document. 

Desirable/Preferred:

• Graduate standing in a relevant program at Emory University
• An interest in digital content management, history of science, Indigenous histories, digital humanities, and a willingness to learn about repository development and digital archives
• Ability to establish priorities, set and meet goals and deadlines, and adhere to project timelines
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Salary: $20/hr for 200 hours in each project year. Three years total.

Let's Talk! Drop in Consultations for Emory Graduate & Professional Students

Let's Talk is an informal, free, confidential consultation service that allows graduate and professional students to speak with a clinician and receive support for any challenge they may be experiencing. Let's Talk is not a substitute for formal counselling but can be used to receive short-term support and resources.

Students will meet 1:1 for a 15-20 minute video or phone consultation with their CAPS consultant.

Apply for the Emory International Council (EIC) or Emory Intercultural Leadership Program (EILP)

EIC: Do you want to help plan ISSS events and make your voice heard as an international undergrad, grad or professional student? ISSS is seeking applicants for the Emory International Council (EIC). The EIC is a diverse group of selected international students from a variety of schools at Emory University. EIC members meet one to two times monthly with ISSS senior staff as representatives of international students to generate new program ideas that will support international students and foster connections between US and international students. The EIC will provide suggestions and input on ISSS programs and offer new ideas about the types of support and services that will help international students have a fulfilling and successful Emory experience. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, members will receive a certificate.

EILP: By participating in the Emory Intercultural Leadership Program (EILP), international and domestic students will receive training on global leadership skills and intercultural competency development, attend cultural and leadership events, participate in a service-learning project, and share their cultures and perspectives with each other and the Emory community. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, students will receive a certificate.

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) 

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of this gathering is to extend a warm welcome and build a community for international students and scholars while enjoying free lunch!   

ICFL occurs on Fridays from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm beginning September 9 in Cannon Chapel Brooks Commons. Meals are limited; therefore, please RSVP in advance for each week you will attend.

AMIS Atlanta is an organization in Atlanta with the mission of “Welcoming and Connecting International Students with Friends.” AMIS offerings include a Welcome Event on the Georgia Tech campus, a blog focusing on the highlights and challenges of being an international student, and more.

Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship: Applications Now Open

The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the best and brightest minds in their postdoctoral research, connecting them with world-class academics and leading researchers. The Fellowship provides generous funding for eligible international applicants to conduct research in any academic discipline at eligible institutions in Israel. Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded without regard to religion, gender, age or ethnicity.

The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. 

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.
