Dear LGS Community,
Again today, we face the horrific news of murders and deaths driven by prejudice and racism in our city and nation. I write to express my deepest concern and anger and to call attention to our values and commitments in the face of the continuing surge of anti-Asian attacks and hate crimes, nationally. Acts of racism and the divisive rhetoric that fuels it cannot continue unaddressed and unanswered.
The contributions of Emory students, faculty, and staff from Asian/Asian American communities are treasured – integral and essential to our excellence. Those who choose hate are forfeiting the privilege of the rich and beautiful human experiences gained from embracing each other’s differences. LGS condemns all xenophobia and racism and stands in solidarity to support, advocate, and fight against these behaviors.
To those impacted in any way by these events, we are here for you. Although we are physically separated due to the pandemic, we are still united as a community. Please do not hesitate to seek support. I encourage those who need it to reach out to family, friends, and community groups or visit Emory’s support resources webpages for students, faculty, and staff.
As always, you may contact the following LGS staff for assistance.
Together, we will continue to let our differences strengthen us rather than divide us. Please take care, be well, and stay safe during these challenging times.
With you, with care and support and respect,
--Lisa ----- Lisa A. Tedesco, Ph.D. Vice Provost for Academic Affairs – Graduate Studies Dean, James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies Professor, Rollins School of Public Health Emory University
