Dr. Marisela Martinez-Cola, ‘18G was the first presenter of the Emory Sociology Speaker Series. The Laney Graduate School alum and current assistant professor of Sociology at Utah State University presented an overview of her research that focuses on pivotal desegregation court cases preceding Brown v. Board of Education.

What is Indigenous Popular Culture in the 21st Century?

 

This talk will discuss contemporary, Indigenous popular culture as a form of what decolonial theorist Frantz Fanon called "combat literature." It will also offer a critical commentary on the intersections of Black and Indigenous peoples in popular culture and speculates on what these relationships might look like going forward.

Fellowships

Digital Dissertations Scholars Program

 

The Digital Dissertation Scholars Program (DDSP) offers mini-grant funding up to $2,500 and personalized guidance in drafting a digital project plan. During this year-long program, students will work closely with their advisor, an interdisciplinary cohort of fellow students, and digital scholarship professionals to tailor a plan that is customized to their project. Application  Deadline: March 13, 2020.

Data Incubator

 

The Data Science Fellowship Program from The Data Incubator is one of the most rigorous, intensive programs available. Designed to create the data scientists of tomorrow from qualified STEM academics, this full-time, eight-week program provides the skills needed to succeed.

 

The Spring 2020 session runs from April 06 to May 29.

Graduate Students in Psychology and Neuroscience (GSPN) Faculty-Student Brunch

 

The Graduate Students in Psychology and Neuroscience organization (GSPN) is hosting a faculty-student brunch with Dr. Elizabeth Kim as the guest host. This brunch is an intimate event during which students engage in productive dialogue with faculty members. This event will only be open to the first ten graduate students who RSVP. Please specify any food allergies in the RSVP form. A week before the brunch, the address of the location will be provided only those ten.

Personal Financial Planning Courses Offered by Goizueta Business School

 

The Goizueta School of Business invites Laney Graduate Students to register for two of their newest courses. The financial literacy courses, “ACT 499R/599R - Personal Financial Planning” and “FIN 399/599: Personal Financial Investing”, will be offered in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, respectively. This course might be of particular interest to graduate students who would like guidance on issues related to investing. Space is limited. Details are included in the supporting document.

QUAL-WORKS: Registrations Open for May 2020

 

QUAL-WORKS offers a series of training workshops on qualitative research. They offer three types of workshops: scheduled workshops, individual mentoring sessions, and customized workshops. Scheduled workshops are held twice a year during summer.

 

The following workshops are open for registrations:

  • Mentored Qualitative Analysis | May 15

Write-Up Fellowship Forum

 

The Write-up Fellowship Forum introduces students to the unique features of a dissertation completion fellowship application. Write-up fellowship proposals are a distinct sub-genre of grant writing, and this session will describe the genre in detail. Plenty of time for questions and answers will be provided. The intended audience includes advanced graduate students planning to apply for a dissertation completion fellowship in next fall's competition.
