Deferred Enrollment

Deferral Policy for New Students Admitted for Fall 2020

Updated July 10, with a new request deadline: August 1.

Laney Graduate School recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the lives and plans of our newly admitted students.  Many of those disruptions – including delayed educational progress, illness, suspension of visa services, and more – may impact their ability to move to Atlanta by the 2020-2021 academic year in August 2020.

To provide new students the time and flexibility to address such challenges, LGS will allow any student who accepted an offer of admission for fall 2020 to defer enrollment for one year, to fall 2021.

How to Make a Deferral Request

Requests to defer enrollment should be made using this form

Please submit your request by August 1, 2020.  If this request deadline is difficult to meet because of issues with the visa process, please send a note to your program with a copy to laneygs@emory.edu.

What Happens if You Defer?

  • You will be scheduled to enroll in the fall of 2021.
  • Your terms of support will remain unchanged.
  • You will receive an email confirming your deferral.
  • In February 2021, we will ask you to confirm your intent to enroll in fall 2021. If you are an international student, we will process new visa documentation at that time.

Please note that deferrals will be granted for the full academic year.  Our academic and research programs for graduate training begin in the fall.  Requests for spring deferrals will not be accepted.
