Welcome Tamara Caspary to the LGS Team!
Laney Graduate School is pleased to announce that Tamara Caspary, professor of human genetics at the Emory University School of Medicine, will serve as associate dean for strategic projects, effective February 10, 2025.
In this role, Caspary will lead initiatives to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among students and faculty and develop a comprehensive grant-writing program to help students successfully compete for federal and foundation funding opportunities.
In addition to her research, Caspary has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting students and advancing graduate education at Emory. She chaired the Laney Graduate School Executive Council and directs the NIH-funded Genetics Predoctoral Training Program (GPTP), which includes students from 14 departments across three schools. She also serves on advisory boards for several NIH-funded programs and is the scientific director of the Emory Mouse Gene Targeting and Transgenic Core.
Laney Graduate School looks forward to the leadership and expertise Caspary will bring to advancing its strategic priorities.

Friendly reminder: If you haven't already, we invite you to nominate individuals who have made a significant impact on our community for an LGS Award. Self-nominations are also welcome, though potential nominees are encouraged to seek nominations from others.

This prestigious award is the highest honor presented to a student by Emory University, recognizing one undergraduate and one graduate student who have performed the most “significant, meritorious, and devoted service to Emory University.”

Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola is pleased to announce open office hours for Laney Graduate School students.

Office hours will be held in the Laney Graduate School administrative offices, located in the North Decatur Building, Suite 200.
No appointment is necessary, individual appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

Student Union Collective Bargaining Update
Emory University and SEIU Workers United, Southern Region Local 29, held productive collective bargaining sessions on January 17 and January 31, 2025.
The University and the Union reached a tentative agreement on the holidays article, which defines the university holidays that bargaining unit members may observe. In addition, the parties held productive discussions around leave, academic integrity, orientation, and several economic matters.
The next session will take place on Feb.11, 2025. Further updates will be provided in the Grad Report as negotiations progress.

The Emory Writing Center is Hiring New Tutors
The Emory Writing Center (EWC) is hiring new tutors to join its team! Tutors will play a key role in providing personalized writing support to students at all levels, helping them at any stage of the writing process with projects across a variety of disciplines and languages. This is a great opportunity for those passionate about writing and helping others improve their skills.
Applications are being accepted until March 1 for tutors to begin in the fall.

Be Productive with Fellow Graduate Students: Join the LGS Graduate Writing Group
The LGS Graduate Writing Group provides an opportunity to focus on writing in a structured and supportive environment. Whether you're drafting a paper, reading source materials, or working on tables and figures, the writing group offers both in-person and online options to help you stay on track and make significant progress.
The writing group will include:
- Writing sprints to advance your projects – including drafting, reading, outlining or refining tables/figures
- Option to receive feedback from an Emory Writing Center Fellow or English Language Specialist
Time: 12-2 p.m.

Emory University Women’s Club Memorial Fellowship
The Emory University Women’s Club Memorial Fellowship in Graduate Research will support one doctoral student by providing funding for research, writing, or living expenses related to their dissertation.
The awardee is expected to:
- Devote no less than one-half time to the dissertation and should complete the degree in the 2025-2026 academic year
- Make a brief research and publicly accessible presentation at a meeting of the Emory Women’s Club
- Submit a final report explaining how the funds were expended

SIRE Fellowship for Natural Sciences
With joint funding from the Laney Graduate School and the Dean’s Office of Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Emory College’s Office for Undergraduate Education will award up to three graduate student fellowships to advanced graduate students in the natural sciences.
Fellowship duration: September 1, 2025 - August 31, 2026
Compensation: $8,000 stipend for 12-months
Extended deadline: Friday, Feb. 28, 2025

Emory’s International Student and Scholars office provides several resources to help international students and scholars file their taxes before the Tuesday, April 15 deadline:
- ISSS Taxes webpage: While ISSS staff are not tax experts, they have created a dedicated webpage with helpful information.
- Tax Preparation Software: Emory offers access to Sprintax, a tax preparation software for international students and scholars.
- Free Tax Webinars: Sprintax also hosts free webinars covering topics such as filing requirements for non-residents, necessary forms, and more. Details will be posted in the "Get Help" section of the ISSS Taxes webpage when available.
