Emory’s graduate student housing expansion slated to open in summer 2027

Emory’s on-campus graduate student housing, known as “The Ridge,” broke ground in September 2022 and opened to residents in July 2024. Now, Phase II of the Graduate and Professional Student Housing Initiative is officially underway and slated to open in summer 2027.

“Phase II of The Ridge will build on the success of Phase I, which provides competitively priced housing within walking distance of all graduate programs,” says Robin Morey, vice president for campus services and chief planning officer.

The new structure will be an L-shaped building wrapping around two sides of the existing parking deck, the front of which will face Haygood Drive. Phase II will add 383 beds and community space to the existing 535 beds. The site is a 15-minute or less walk to every graduate program, lab and library on Emory’s Atlanta campus, so students can reach their campus destinations without needing a car. The housing also has Emory shuttle and MARTA bus access.

The body is present: ‘Insistent Presence’ celebrates the human form in African art

Margaret Nagawa was thinking about bodies — specifically, what she and other scholars see as the ubiquity of the human body in historical arts of Africa.

Whether representing power, identity or other themes, “the human figure is very central” in classical African sculpture, painting and other media, Nagawa says.

“Insistent Presence: Contemporary African Art from the Chazen Collection,” on view at the Michael C. Carlos Museum through Dec. 14, features work created by living artists engaging with the idea of the African body. Its presence. Its absence. And, importantly, Nagawa notes, experiences of both pain and delight.

“We might think about how the African body has suffered, but it has also lived so joyfully,” says Nagawa, who curated the exhibit. Nagawa is a PhD candidate at the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies specializing in contemporary African art at Emory’s Institute for African Studies.

Tips and Strategies for Serving as a Teaching Assistant in the U.S. Context

Graduate students who are new to the US higher education classroom environment may have unique questions or concerns about what to expect in their role as a Teaching Assistant (TA). The goal of this session is for participants to develop a firm understanding of the skills needed to ensure greater success with serving as a TA in the US classroom.

Participants will learn what to expect in the US classroom culture as well as strategies for communicating as a TA with Emory students, specifically useful phrases for asking and answering questions, asking for clarification, and giving feedback. There will be opportunities to interact with experienced TAs who can share their perspectives and advice about their experience with this topic. This session is designed specifically for TAs who are new to the US educational context.

The Hatchery Innovation Consulting Fellow

The Hatchery is seeking an innovation consulting fellow to help support student entrepreneurs and innovators from all Emory schools.

With training and oversight from The Hatchery, the fellow will provide student innovators with programming and peer-to-peer coaching on innovation/entrepreneurship (I/E) best practices to ensure all student innovators are able to discern and execute their best next step. The role will consist of 85-90% self-guided work and 15-10% mentoring and coaching.

Duration: Now until May 10, 2026

Time: Approximately 2 hours per day, at least 10 hours/week will during 9a-5p normal business hours

Compensation: Starting at $15/hour
