LGS alum Richie Hofmann receives a National Endowment for the Arts 2025 Creative Writing Fellowship
LGS alum Richie Hofmann, PhD, class of 2018, is one of 35 writers to receive a 2025 Creative Writing Fellowship in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts. The fellowship will allow Hofmann to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career development.
Hofmann is the author of two books of poems, A Hundred Lovers (Alfred A. Knopf, 2022) and Second Empire (Alice James Books, 2015). His poetry has appeared recently in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Poetry, and The Yale Review, and he has been honored with the Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University.

2025 LGS Dean’s Address – A Must-Attend Event
The 2025 Dean’s Address will provide the Laney Graduate School community with key updates, insights, and a look ahead at the school's vision for the future. During the event LGS Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola will share important announcements related to the graduate experience.

All members of the LGS community, including students, faculty, and staff, are invited to attend. The event will offer an opportunity to engage with leadership, connect with colleagues, and enjoy refreshments while learning about the school’s strategic priorities for the year ahead.

Student Union Collective Bargaining Update
Emory University and SEIU Workers United, Southern Region Local 29, held a productive collective bargaining session on Feb. 11, 2025.
The University and the Union have reached a tentative agreement on the Orientation article, which provides the Union with time at the annual LGS Orientation to introduce itself to incoming PhD students.
During the session, the Union presented the Workspace Accessibility article.
The next session will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. Updates will be provided in the Grad Report as negotiations progress.

Final Call for Nominations: 2025 LGS Awards
The deadline to submit nominations for the 2025 LGS Awards is fast approaching. The Laney Graduate School community is invited to recognize outstanding alumni, faculty, staff, and students who have made a significant impact. Self-nominations are welcome, though potential nominees are encouraged to seek nominations from others.

Honoring Excellence
Award recipients will be recognized at the 2025 Laney Graduate School Awards Ceremony and Reception from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10 in Convocation Hall.
Nominations play a vital role in celebrating the individuals who contribute to the success and vibrancy of the Laney Graduate School community.

Emory University Women’s Club Memorial Fellowship
The Emory University Women’s Club Memorial Fellowship in Graduate Research will support one doctoral student by providing funding for research, writing, or living expenses related to their dissertation.
The awardee is expected to:
- devote no less than one-half time to the dissertation and should complete the degree in the 2025-2026 academic year,
- make a brief research and publicly accessible presentation at a meeting of the Emory Women’s Club, and
- submit a final report explaining how the funds were expended.

ELSP Workshop on AI-Aided Communication with Hannah Nicol
This workshop will explore how generative AI can enhance communication, writing, and language skills development. It will also discuss best practices for using a chatbot—such as ChatGPT—as a virtual conversation partner, brainstorming collaborator, and writing assistant.
The session emphasizes critical evaluation of AI outputs and mindful integration into communication, writing processes, and so much more!
Light lunch/refreshments will be provided.

Students Invited to Share Insights on Health and Well-Being
The Center for Student Wellbeing is inviting all students to participate in a survey on health and well-being. This survey offers an opportunity to provide invaluable input that will help shape the future of student support systems at Emory University. By sharing their experiences and perspectives, students can play an active role in improving the programs and resources that contribute to a healthier campus community.
Participating in the survey is a chance to drive meaningful change, ensuring that Emory’s health and wellness initiatives effectively address student needs. The information gathered will help refine existing services and develop new strategies to enhance overall well-being on campus.
