Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society

In 2019, the Laney Graduate School became a member of the Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society, which is named for the first African American doctoral recipient in the United States (Physics, Yale University, 1876), Dr. Edward Alexander Bouchet. The Society acknowledges outstanding scholarly achievement and promotes diversity and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate. It is a network of preeminent scholars who exemplify academic and personal excellence, foster environments of support and serve.

To be considered for admission into Emory's chapter and the national chapter, scholars must be in good academic standing, have entered candidacy, and intend to pursue academic careers with a future commitment to advancing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in higher education. The application deadline is January 22, 2024.

The Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at Emory University will be accepting applications from postdoctoral fellows for the 2nd time this year. This expansion of eligible members is in hope to established a robust and dedicated cohort of scholars and fellows dedicated to diverse excellences and the initiatives of the society at Emory University.

Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Scholars

Eligibility Requirements

Bouchet Graduate Honor Society scholars serve as examples of CLASS:

  1. Character
  2. Leadership
  3. Advocacy for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the academy
  4. Scholarship
  5. Service

In the spirit of Dr. Bouchet’s commitment to these ideals, Bouchet Graduate Honor Society scholars must demonstrate significant achievement in those five areas.

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be a full-time student in any doctoral program, in excellent standing; or a
    postdoctoral fellow who has received their PhD degree over the last 6 years
  • Have completed all coursework and successfully advanced to candidacy;
  • Must not be graduating or ending their postdoctoral appointment prior to
    December 2024;
  •  Demonstrate the embodiment of the five CLASS areas;
  • Must be available to attend the entire Annual Bouchet Graduate Honor
    Society Conference in New Haven, CT on April 5-7, 2024.

Application Tips

Priority consideration is given to scholars who intend to pursue academic careers; have a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in higher education; and are from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the academy.

Application Checklist

A complete application will include:

  • A current curriculum vitae/resume;
  • A statement of purpose (1-2 pages) that explains how you embody the characteristics of Dr. Bouchet and the mission of the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society;
  • A statement(1-2 pages) describing your commitment to diversity in the academy and future professional plans in the academy (in the online application, upload this as “Additional Attachment 1”);
  • A letter of recommendation from your advisor/PI/supervisor assessing your embodiment of the five CLASS areas.
  • For graduate scholars only:
    • A copy of your Emory transcript (a copy of an unofficial transcript issued to you is acceptable);
  • For postdoctoral fellows only:
    • A copy of your degree or your final doctoral transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable)

Laney Graduate School doctoral students will apply using the Advanced Fellowship form available in the Laney Connect Hub.

  • Log in to the Laney Connect Hub, using your Emory credentials
  • Click on the Advanced Fellowship tab, and then on the link to the Advanced Fellowships application form

Post-docs will apply using a dedicated application form for post-docs: click here to access the form.

  • If you are a post-doc taking a class or two in LGS as a special standing, use the post-doc version of the form.
