Laney Graduate School (LGS) inducted its newest members into the National Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society and celebrated all Bouchet Scholars at Emory in a pinning ceremony on April 27.

The ceremony – hosted by LGS EDGE and directed by Associate Dean Amanda Marie James and Naima Barton form the LGS Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Community Engagement– marked the first in-person celebration of Bouchet Scholars since Emory became a member of the Society in 2019.

Five talented scholars make up Emory’s 2022 class of inductees:
  • Ana Maria Hoffmann, doctoral candidate in Psychology
  • Roseline Jean Louis, doctoral candidate in Nursing
  • Ayanna Jones, doctoral candidate in Chemistry
  • Ra’Niqua Lee, doctoral candidate in English
  • Lenore Monterroza, doctoral candidate in Cancer Biology

Members of the 2022 Bouchet Graduate Honor Society cohort were pinned at the reception. From L-R: Lenore Monterroza, Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola, Ra’Niqua Lee, Ayanna Jones, Roseline Jean Louis, and Ana Maria Hoffmann.

Emory’s 2020 and 2021 inductees were also honored.

Named for Edward A. Bouchet, the first African American doctoral recipient in the U.S., the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement and promotes diversity and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate.

To qualify for membership in the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society, a scholar must exemplify academic and personal excellence, foster environments of support, and serve others. Members demonstrate significant achievements in CLASS: character, leadership, advocacy, scholarship, and service. They also commit to continuing to advance diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in higher education in their careers.

“Each and every one of the members of the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society has played an important role in building our supportive and inclusive community here at Emory,” said Kimberly Jacob Arriola, LGS Dean.

Speaking to the honorees, Dean Arriola continued, “Your work is an important part of what makes Laney Graduate School such a special place. We are so proud you chose Laney Graduate School for your training.”
