Evaluation Philosophy
Our evaluation process aims to provide a fair and measurable view of each applicant; this includes incorporating elements of our Vision and Mission Statements that allow us to assess an applicant's capabilities, potential, and overall fit within our institution. We recognize the value of considering academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, community service, leadership qualities, and personal experiences. These factors construct a comprehensive profile of an applicant's academic and professional abilities and character.
Through this transparent and fair admissions process, we can ensure that each application is reviewed meticulously and thoroughly. We strive to make decisions that align with our school's values and encompass a diverse and talented student body.
Evaluation Process: Assessing Graduate School Applicants
At Laney Graduate School, we take a comprehensive approach to evaluating applicants, considering a range of criteria to identify individuals who will thrive in our program and contribute to their fields. Our evaluation process is designed to assess not only academic preparation but also an applicant's scholarly potential; alignment with program academic, scholarly, and research opportunities; non-traditional learning experiences; leadership or community involvement; and grit, resilience, self-awareness, and collaboration.
- Academic Preparation: We review each applicant's academic achievements, including courses/credit load, academic honors, and relevant research and scholarly experiences. Exceptional academic performance serves as a strong indicator of potential success in our programs. We suggest the recruitment and application review committee of each program work together to establish these criteria. Criteria should be based on what skills and knowledge are seen to be vital for the overall successful progression of a scholar in each program and should consider achievements beyond traditional coursework.
- Research and Scholarly Potential: We look for evidence of the applicant's research or scholarly potential and enthusiasm for their chosen field of study through their research experiences, publications, presentations, or other achievements in their field. This may include awards or other recognition.
- Alignment with the Program: We seek applicants who can clearly articulate how the academic, scholarly, and research opportunities of our graduate programs align with their specific career and professional goals, passions, and experiences.
- Non-traditional Learning: We value applicants who have pursued diverse learning experiences beyond the traditional academic setting. This includes internships, work experience, entrepreneurial ventures, or any other impactful non-traditional learning encounters.
- Leadership or Community Involvement: We recognize the importance of leadership skills and community engagement. We seek applicants who have demonstrated leadership qualities, actively participated in academic and community initiatives, and shown a commitment to making a positive impact on society.
- Grit, Resilience, Self-awareness, and Collaboration:We consider these to be essential attributes for success in our programs and beyond. Applicants who have demonstrated perseverance, resilience in the face of challenges, empathy in their interactions, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others are highly valued and will contribute to an inclusive and diverse academic community.
